Fresh from the USA is a new exercise class called ‘Zumba’ and they’ve just started some classes in Bristol, so we thought we’d give it a go!
Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance fitness class that combines gym-type class moves and easy to follow dance steps. Thankfully, no previous dance experience is required!
The class was packed and the room was warm – we knew we’d be hot and sweaty at the end. There are no special requirements for this class, just turn up in your gym gear with a bottle of water and a towel and join the crowd.
Roni, the instructor, is full of energy! She’d just finished one class and was bursting with enthusiasm for ours. I’ve tried a lot of fitness classes in the past and sometimes you can feel a little self-aware, especially when you’re going left and the class is going right, but there is no room for those type of feelings in this class – if you fancy doing it differently it’s called ‘flavour’. It certainly helps you feel more relaxed!
The class lasted an hour and consisted of dancing, lunging, twirling, squatting and jumping to Latin and International music. There are plenty of breaks to grab a drink of water and Roni is on a stage so everyone can clearly see what you’re supposed to be doing.
The class is aimed at men and women, but this class was mostly women – of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels. I spoke to a few people after the class and they said it was tricky at first, but they’ve been going for over a month and have no intention of quitting anytime soon.
Will I be in the line-up for J-Lo’s next music video? Unlikely! Will I have amazing definition after this class? Probably not. If you’re looking for an extreme fitness class this probably isn’t for you, but if you’re after something to get you moving, the blood pumping, burning a few calories and having a giggle along the way then Zumba will be right up your street.
If you’re based in Bristol, classes run every day in various locations. Check out the Zumba website or call 07881 626 988 for further information.
