May Friendly's fitness fad

British military training

Devised by a former Army Major, Robin Cope, BMF is different way of getting fit. It’s essential circuit training for an hour with some added army style terminology held outdoors instead of at the gym.

BMF instructorsBeing a beautiful evening with the sun still shining made this military style training seem much friendlier. The anticipation started to build as the class drew closer to starting but it was reassuring to see all shapes and sizes and level of fitness arriving. The groups are split into 3 – blue, red and green – depending on how hard you wish to punish your body! Naturally, we opted for blue, easy.

Our instructor, Martin, was wonderful – not only did he push us to try a bit harder but having a smiley soldier in uniform is always going to attract the ladies. There was a fair amount of jogging involved as well as squats, lunges, push-ups, sit-ups and stepping backwards down a hill. Team activities helped to keep you motivated so not to let your other team members down and obviously the competitive people amongst us pushed themselves harder so that they weren’t the last to finish the activity.

National Friendly EmployeeTo the onlooker we might have appeared slightly nutty but it’s difficult to feel self-conscious in a group who are all very friendly and laughing as we’re arm wrestling one another in the middle of a park.

Overall the class was a wonderful opportunity to get fit outdoors, meet some new people and try something a little different and 2 days on our muscles still feel a little tender but it was worth it. The only negative feedback we can report is the lack of water breaks.
